Bulging Disc in the Neck Needs to be Properly Treated

Anyone with a bulging disc in the neck needs to seek medical attention for it. If this problem isn’t’ taken care of properly it can result in limited mobility of the neck. It can also result in chronic back pain. The entire spine can be affected when such a health issue is present so don’t take it lightly. Such a problem is usually due to some form of trauma such as a car accident.

For other people tough the bulging disc in the neck is simply a sign of old age. As a person gets older it is natural for the body to become less flexible. Regular exercise can help reduce such changes, but many people fail to do exercises for their neck. It is a good idea to add them to your normal routine to prevent such health concerns later on.

Many older people can’t drive a car due to this problem as it is impossible to turn their neck from side to side to check for traffic. Another common problem is that people find it hard to sleep well at night. Changing your pillow to one that is very firm may be necessary to offer your neck enough support. Completing normal job duties may be hard too so your doctor may have to write a note that you have limited abilities with some of them for a period of time.

When a person has a bulging disc in the neck they may start to feel some pressure and light pain. However, as time progresses that pain is going to become more severe. It will be very difficult to go about normal daily activities because of it. The pain will move its way to the back and then you will have pain there too. It can also move towards the head resulting in daily headaches.

When a bulging disc in the neck is the result of a trauma there may be more than one disc that is affected. This will definitely make the pain more severe that a person is experiencing. An MRI may need to be done in order to see the full extent of the damages. The use of heat and ice may be alternated in order to help with the pain and discomfort as well.

The treatment for a bulging disc in the neck starts with pain medications as well as those to reduce the swelling. A neck brace may be placed on it to immobilize it. The body will need lots of rest. With the neck held in one position it will be less likely to continue being damaged. This can be hard to get used to but it can also significantly reduce the full recovery time by more than half.

Surgery is usually a last resort for a bulging disc in the neck though. This may need to be considered if nerves are being pinched. As a result there can be tingling in the arms, shoulders, or the legs. Taking the pressure off those areas is necessary in order for a person to gain use of them completely again.

Restricting movements when you have a bulging disc in the neck is important as well. This can be difficult though as most of us do use these neck muscles more than we think for work, driving, and even turning when someone calls our name. Taking care of this problem though will help you to have a better quality of life overall. This type of health problem can affect many areas of our body so make sure you get a complete evaluation.
